Travelling Teddy, one of the original characters behind Travel Activities, was inspired by my daughter’s much-loved teddy bear.

Watching her become more interested in familiar activities when Teddy became part of the story helped me realise how much difference the right character could make.

But the story actually began with one very old, very well-loved teddy.

The teddy that couldn’t be replaced

Toddlers tend to pick their favourite toy or a blanket during very young age. They receive various gifts, but there is just something very special about that one chosen item that adults don’t always see. </ins>

For my little monkey, it was her Teddy.

She carried him everywhere. No matter how old he became or how many times I had to sew him back together, he remained her absolute favourite.

Once, Grandma couldn’t resist buying her a brand-new teddy.

Nope.

She wasn’t interested.

The new teddy was lovely, but when bedtime came, she grabbed her old, repeatedly repaired Teddy and dragged him into bed with her.

That devotion was so touching that when I started creating Travel Activities, I knew I wanted to bring Teddy to life.

He became an explorer.

When Teddy became part of the activities

The first time my daughter saw the illustrated Travelling Teddy, she clapped her hands with delight. She immediately wanted to do the labyrinth so she could help Teddy reach his destination.

Then she wanted to colour the mandalas.

Then decorate Teddy’s luggage.

It was extremely cute. But I also noticed something interesting.

Activities she already knew suddenly felt more exciting because Teddy was part of them.

A simple labyrinth wasn’t just a labyrinth anymore. She was helping Teddy complete his journey. That’s when I realised how much difference a familiar character could make for my own children.

From one teddy to a whole world of characters

That summer, while walking along the beach with my children, we started talking about the characters they would like to travel with. Those conversations inspired me to turn their favourite characters into themes of Travelling Activities. I used AI to help me.

There were plenty of late nights spent guiding it towards exactly the right image, changing details and trying again. I didn’t mind.

Seeing my children’s smiles when a new character appeared — and watching their excitement about what can they do with new theme — was reward enough.

Travelling Teddy may have been inspired by one battered childhood toy, but he ended up teaching me something important about Travel Activities:

sometimes the character is what turns an activity into an adventure.

Does your child have a favourite character or cuddly companion they take everywhere? Maybe one day their little friend could become part of a Travel Activities adventure too.

Travelling Teddy, one of the original characters behind Travel Activities, was inspired by my daughter’s much-loved teddy bear.
